Dr Gareth Jones
Gareth is a research associate at the Kavli Institute for Cosmology and the Department of Physics.
Following the completion of his PhD from the New Mexico Institute for Mining and Technology in 2018, he held postdoctoral research positions at the University of Cambridge (2018-2022) and the University of Oxford (2022-2024).
His research focuses on the observation and analysis of some of the earliest galaxies in the Universe, and how they relate to galaxies nearer to us. Since the light from these sources has been travelling for a significant portion of the age of the Universe (i.e., more than 10 billion years), this study entails building a historical record of how galaxies have evolved throughout cosmic time. Throughout his career, he had worked as part of global collaborations of astrophysicists to analyse data from telescopes on Earth (e.g.; the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, JVLA; the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, ALMA) and in space (e.g.; the James Webb Space Telescope, JWST). By combining these data from different wavelength regimes, we can see how galaxies form, interact, build up gas reservoirs, make stars, and evolve from the early Universe to the present day.
At Clare Hall, Gareth is accompanied by his wife, Dr. Liliana Galindo, Affiliated Assistant Professor (Department of Psychiatry), Consultant Psychiatrist, and PI of the Cambridge Psychedelic Research Group.
